In various occasions we were asked, if our bags were original or not. Yes, they are! We can assure you of that. They cannot be more original than they are :) Here is the proof...The photo story of our latest journey to Colombia.
Due to numerous & simultaneous projects in the Caribbean, including the Caribbean coast of Colombia we get on the spot on a regular basis - all together or as solo travelers. We choose bags and accessories for you and we look at the creative processes. When duties stop us on this side of the ocean, we count on the trusted person onsite who supports us in our distant efforts.
Wayuu bags have officially been recognized as the national heritage of Colombia, Venezuela would probably do the same, if not for the political turmoil, that is currently experiencing.
The Wayuu Indigenous communities on both sides of the Colombian-Venezuelan border use their bags for various purposes and each type of bag is characterized by its own name.
In addition, the bags are divided depending on the quantity of weave strands into so-called una hebra (in this case bag is created from thin weave strand) or dos hebras (here bag consists of 2 or more weave strands). The creation process of the 1st type is much more time consuming. Our Customers value both of them, because of their artistic craftsmanship.
There are a lot of companies on the market who are trying to commercialize Wayuu bags under different brand names. And it's OK!
Thanks to our efforts, in the last couple of years the world was able to admire the intricately created craft that combines old tradition with the almost haute couture fantasy.
There are no better or worse Wayuu bags. Believe us. The only difference is how much each company is willing to spend on marketing campaigns related to the promotion of the patterns that the company has chosen, which is usually reflected in the price of the product. We supply our collections in the same places. Some patterns are handmade by the same crafters.
We are lucky to know some of them personally. :)
In general - do not immediately believe in the story that a particular pattern was invented specifically by the particular company. You can count on the fingers of one hand the Colombian designers who have contributed to the transformation of traditional Wayuu bags into fashion accessories, adding to them for example leather elements or Swarovski crystals and present their collections on catwalks.
Wayuu crafters are artists, although some of them often cannot even read and write. They create traditional patterns or they respond to the demand while preparing funny patterns. The final result depends solely on them. We happened to choose for our collection the bags 100% invented by the Wayuu women and then realized that other companies claimed them as their own patterns!
We hate that and will always speak about it openly. There are plenty of cases of cultural appropiation, when the fashion world hijacks the traditional patterns without showing the source.
The luloplanet team is comprised of three people with wide background in digital marketing, social media, ecommerce & financial markets in the areas totally different than the one represented by luloplanet.
And also ... the family of travelers.
Why do we have the lower prices than the competition?
We have been the largest distributor of Wayuu bags in Central and Eastern Europe. We launch the collections on various markets in short series. We also provide wholesale services to other vendors across the globe.
The in-depth knowledge of Latin American culture and Spanish language allows us to act without intermediaries And finally - we are open to alliances with other suppliers who, like us, want to act in a fair-trade spirit.
Competition is not bad if we all have a legitimate goal.
